
ASTERISK, transforming seawater into green hydrogen
Our consortium
Hey there! We are ASTERISK, a consortium of 12 partners from 8 different countries. Our project is based, from start to finish, on the concept of circularity: we start with a very abundant resource, such as seawater, to produce green energy and finally return the water to its source, but cleaner than before!
Our purpose
Our purpose is to provide knowledge and experience in green hydrogen production on a scale compatible with the needs of today’s industry, in order to contribute to the need to move away from the use of fossil fuels that cause the emission of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
Our objectives
Our objective is to develop an electrolyser, a system capable of splitting water into its basic components, to produce hydrogen. To this end, we will use electrical energy from renewable sources such as solar or wind power to produce so-called green hydrogen. In addition, the electrolyser developed by ASTERISK will avoid the use of toxic compounds such as PFAS and will work with abundant minerals such as iron, copper and nickel. All components of the system will operate in high salinity conditions, ensuring its use in remote locations and conserving precious fresh water for other uses.

Know all the work packages of our project
Managing a project as ambitious as ASTERISK, which involves several partners and the manufacture of different components, is extraordinarily complex. That is why our activities are divided into different work packages (WPs), which are like small projects within a larger project. Each WP has a coordinator, a set of tasks and defined deadlines.
Seawater superteam
Besides ASTERISK, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership funded three other projects within the same seawater electrolysis call.
Since the start, a synergy seemed like a great idea! Now, we work very closely with HySEas, Sea4Volt and Sweethy, our “sister projects”, to maximise the outcomes and impact of the initiatives.
